What's Visibility Mean to You?

Technology4Visibility is a hot supply chain topic. Our writers have cranked out articles on the subject, Buzz posts links to visibility articles every week, and I bet you’ve heard from sales guys and marketers pushing their solutions. But what’s it mean when you really get down to it?

Back in the old days when I led a large EDI/eBusiness team, visibility to us meant the ability to locate and see a transaction from beginning to end. For example, for an outbound document we’d want to see it tracked from the ERP module, through our interface, into our translator, in its interchange on the way to the VAN, at the VAN, and receipt verified from the partner. Where Will the Supply Chain Jobs Be?

now-hiringWhen Dickens wrote ‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times’, he wasn’t prognosticating about today’s world. Or was he? If you embrace dazzling technology and mind-blowing innovation, times are good. If you abhor change and get uptight reading about how different the world will be in just a few years, your stomach may be in perpetual knots. The velocity of change is quickening, and there’s no reason to think it’ll slow down.

What is Amazon Supply Doing?

how-to-research-your-competition-pop 8726It must be that time of year. Ever since Amazon began its foray into B2B products, business writers feel obligated to explain every so often how Amazon Supply (AS) will steamroll its new competitors. The latest article, by Clare O’Connor on the Forbes site (see it HERE), doesn’t break much new ground.

I bet you’re questioning how and when you should stick your toe into the water.

The Cycle is Your Friend

Planet-Hype-500x439Gartner’s ‘Hype Cycle’ is a pretty handy little tool. It’s not exactly Moore’s Law, but as far as providing insight into where hot technologies are in the public conversation, it does a great job. If you know where your technology sits on the cycle’s pathway, you can pretty much predict where it’s going, at least from a hype standpoint.

Are We There Yet?

are we there yetI heard a four word phrase today that brought me back some years to travelling with my two sons. We took many road trips as they were growing up. It would take more than two hands to count the number of times I heard them during our travels, “Are we there yet?” Patience, dear sons, patience….we will be there soon enough! But for them, it was never too soon! Read more...

Can’t We Just Execute an EDI Solution Already???

solutions 1A couple of weeks ago I shared snippets of EDI technologies available today that give organizations more choices to meet their EDI needs. But have you thought about your internal business partner processes and needs? Though EDI is a technology, core business partners and processes will still be mainstream players when choosing your EDI solution. Read more...

Competition for the Last Mile

last mileWhether you consider the ‘last mile’ challenge a customer service, supply chain, or logistics issue, it’s a topic that could be the next frontier for competitive advantage in the retail space. But what exactly are we talking about? Is it same day delivery, the use of ‘valets’ to provide immediate delivery at a premium, or the attempt to get a product in the customer’s hands when he wants it at the least cost? When I read through recent articles on the topic, it seems like they’re all considered ‘last mile’ issues. Heck, delivery-to-store and to storage lockers can even be thought of in the same vein.

Industry experts, high level consultants, research institutions, and famous pundits make predictions about the upcoming year, while conveniently failing to mention how their predictions from last year turned out. Hey, why can't I take a shot at that? Read more...
