A lot of us in the supply chain probably missed this because maybe we regarded it as an advertisement or because a 42-page document is not what we have time for in our busy days. Ariba joined forces with leading procurement practitioners and influencers to begin a dialogue on the future of procurement and to create a road map for how to get there.

As ecommerce continues its upward growth, more and more merchants are considering and leveraging drop shipping, in which manufacturers or distributors handle and ship orders directly to the end customer. The benefits are clear: there are lower inventory costs and less risk, since retailers don’t have to stockpile inventory that might not sell.

Imagine the bicycle delivery person in the picture pedaling through a “pedestrian zone”. His first stop is a small T-Shirt store. He brings their package inside and gets a signature on his hand-held device. Next, he delivers a smaller package to a teenager in a nearby apartment. Again he gets a signature. You have just seen the tail end of a World-wide “drop ship” scenario that is highly dependent upon COLLABORATION.

With the holiday season comfortably behind them, many retailers are now looking ahead to building out their infrastructure as they prepare for next year. As e-commerce becomes a more prevalent way to purchase goods, e-tailers are increasingly depending on their distributors for help with Dropship, or having the items sent directly from a distribution center. “They are getting that in their heads that they should start utilizing the vendors’ ability to distribute and get the branding experience in place,’’ says Scott Bolduc, Senior Supply Chain Strategist at SPS Commerce.

XML and EDI are two distinct, widely-used technologies with separate and occasionally-complementary uses. Writers in ec-bp.com and elsewhere have already tabulated at length the advantages and disadvantages of each. To the best of my knowledge, though, no one has published an accessible, accurate explanation of XML grammar definition, and how you can use this low-level programming tool to make the most of XML's strengths.

Ever wonder how your telecommuting colleagues really live? Turns out, many of them actually do work in their pajamas. They also tend to love their work-life balance – to the point where they’d take a pay cut to maintain the status quo. This is a “must read” for both remote workers and for their office-bound managers.

Social supply chain is using "social media technology" all across the entire supply chain : from supplier's suppliers to customer's customers. It means integration of social media technologies (collaboration, sharing) to connect and encompass the participants across the whole supply chain.
Do You Have the Right Score?

Use a search engine, any search engine, and type in Vendor Scorecard or Supplier Scorecard. The results will include hundreds of hits on the Internet. What I find a bit surprising, however, is the hundreds of hits result in very little subject matter diversity. There are vendor scorecard templates, software, samples, developing successful scorecard articles, and some organization specific vendor scorecard criteria. This was far from my preconceived notion of what would appear in my search results. Scorecards are very much a part of supply chain practice these days. World class organizations are utilizing them; but it seems very few are discussing them openly.
